BHP - Bullying and harassment

Picture

While BHP had undertaken thorough training of its employees in an attempt to stamp out bullying and harassment in the workplace, incidents were still regularly reported and the training team realised there was a ‘gap’, in which some employees were not understanding what constituted the unwanted behaviour. Two Birds Creative were tasked with addressing this gap. Understanding a different approach was required, the eLearning module was designed based on a ‘You Can’t Ask That’ approach in which people (played by actors) who had exhibited the unwanted behaviour were ‘interviewed’. By creating insight into these characters and depth around what led to the behaviour, learners were able to identify behaviours of their own that may have crossed the line. The module was so successful it was taken up by face-to-face trainers as a tool for teaching about bullying and harassment, as well as distributed throughout BHP Australia.

BHP - Dam safety

Mining sites around the globe have experienced catastrophic dam failures that could have been prevented if the people working around them knew what to look for long before the situation became high risk. BHP engaged Two Birds Creative to help workers not only identify signs and areas of weakness around dams, but to actively participate in dam maintenance by understanding the reasons why early detection was so important. Two Birds Creative used a combination of persuasive, emotive video to address why dam wall observation was crucial, followed by click-around maps of dams so that learners could identify the attributes and characteristics that they needed to look for when working around dams.  The resulting dam safety eLearning module contributed to more extensive risk management in an area that could otherwise lead to fatalities and environmental damage.

GEMCO

GEMCO’s operation on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria has a unique culture influenced by the mine’s remote location. When new eLearning modules were required, Two Birds Creative travelled to the island in order to fully understand the operation and environment. The result has been an ongoing engagement, creating and delivering eLearning modules that are not only relevant to the unique aspects of the site, but engage learners through humour. The use of whiteboard animations featuring ‘Salty’, the saltwater crocodile, have received particularly positive feedback from learners who had otherwise disengaged from traditional eLearning packages.

Bma management of change

BMA’s Management of Change process involves multiple roles and stages, and employees were struggling to piece together not only what to do, but when the Management of Change process should be triggered. Two Birds Creative created an eLearning module that used animations, audio and video to detail the process and roles, then placed learners in a number of simulated real-life scenarios. Learners had to seek information in order to correctly use the Management of Change tool, allowing them to practise the process before they used it.

When you have a small team of employees, which changes often, and a business operation where success relies on employees using templates and procedures within structured project phase and filing systems consistently, neither traditional face-to-face, or LMS training models, will be efficient solutions. Paying a trainer to spend a day or more onboarding each new team member is time intensive. Paying an LMS to host a large library of training modules for a small number of employees is expensive. So, when Montlaur engaged Two Birds Creative as consultants to solve their ‘small team/high training needs’ problem, we designed a solution that brought the power of an LMS, the experience and knowledge of the trainer, and the accessibility of online learning, to the desk-top of a computer for a price-point that worked. We created a PDF index of all training content which we named and scaffolded to mirror internal processes and user search needs, which linked to on-line, bite-size targeted training ‘how-to’s. The consultation process included up-skilling the internal trainer in using the online easy-content-generator software in order to modify and update content when needed.

BMA Project Arrow

When BMA undertook the substantial task of aligning over 40 Standard Operating Procedures across all of its sites, they chose Two Birds Creative to work with the team to create the eLearning modules that would form the suite of new, updated procedures. Two Birds Creative took the heavily technical base content of the SOPs and workshopped with Subject Matter Experts to create streamlined, easy-to-understand modules that addressed not only the ‘how to’ of each procedure, but the ‘why we do it this way’, using BMA’s own employees to help teach and explain in accessible, conversational language.
